An ice maker that stops making ice almost always comes down to one of a few problems. A blocked water supply, a frozen fill line, a failed water inlet valve, or a bad ice maker module. Some units stop making ice completely. Others slow down and start producing small, hollow cubes instead of full ones. The pattern points to the cause.

Check the Water Supply First

Most ice makers pull water from a shutoff valve behind the refrigerator, usually a saddle valve tapped into a nearby water line. If that valve is only partly open, or the supply line behind the fridge has a kink in it, the ice maker gets less water than it needs.

A full water supply problem stops ice production completely. A partial restriction usually shows up as small or hollow cubes instead of full ones. Pull the fridge out and check that the shutoff valve is turned all the way open and the line is not pinched behind the unit.

Frozen Water Line Inside the Freezer

The line that carries water from the back of the fridge into the ice maker runs through the freezer compartment. If the freezer runs colder than it should, or the line has a small leak that drips and refreezes, ice can build up inside the tubing and block it completely.

This is one of the most common causes of an ice maker that worked fine and then stopped overnight. If the freezer feels colder than normal, or frost is visible on the back wall near the line, a frozen line is a likely cause.

Failed Water Inlet Valve

The water inlet valve is electrically controlled. It only opens when the ice maker sends a signal asking for water. In central Kentucky's hard water, mineral buildup inside the valve is common and can keep it from opening all the way, or from opening at all.

A valve that fails electrically will not open even if the water supply behind it is working fine. A valve that fails from mineral buildup usually causes weak ice production before it stops completely.

Ice Maker Module or Motor Failure

The ice maker head unit has a motor, a control module, and a thermostat that all work together. The thermostat waits for the freezer to reach the right temperature, the module tells the mechanism to start the harvest cycle, and the motor turns the ejector arm to release the cubes.

If the motor fails, the unit may click but never cycle. If the module fails, the whole unit can go silent with no attempt to cycle at all. Both problems look similar to a water supply issue from the outside, which is why testing the right component matters.

Dirty or Frosted Evaporator Coils

An ice maker will not cycle correctly if the freezer itself is not reaching a cold enough temperature. Frost buildup on the evaporator coils, often caused by a failing defrost heater or a door seal that is not closing tight, keeps the freezer from holding a steady temperature.

This problem usually shows up alongside other freezer complaints, like food not staying frozen or the freezer running warmer than it used to. If the ice maker issue started around the same time as a freezer temperature problem, the coils are worth checking first.

When the Fix Needs a Technician

A few checks are safe to do without a technician. Make sure the shutoff valve behind the fridge is fully open, look for visible ice blocking the fill line, and check that the ice maker's power switch or arm is in the on position.
